About our club

A free, friendly place where Manchester kids learn to code together at the library.

Welcome to Newton Heath Code Club

We're a free code club running at Newton Heath Library for children aged 8 and up. Whether you've never touched a keyboard or you're already making games at home, you're welcome here.

Our sessions are relaxed and hands-on. Volunteer mentors and library staff help everyone at their own pace — there's no tests, no grades, just building cool stuff and having fun.

We're part of a growing family of Manchester library code clubs. Our friends at Avenue Library Code Club (alcode.club) in Blackley have been inspiring young coders since 2017 — we share the same spirit of community learning.

Meet Newton! 🤖

Newton is our coding mascot — a friendly robot who loves curly braces, laptops and library adventures. You'll spot Newton on our website and at club sessions cheering you on!

"Every expert was once a beginner. Your first line of code is the start of something brilliant." — Newton

What we learn

We follow a path from block coding to real programming languages.

🎮

Scratch — where it begins

Most new members start with Scratch. You'll learn variables, scores, sounds, loops and sprites while making games like Pac-Man, platformers and silly animations.

We use the Scratch backpack to save favourite code blocks and share tricks between projects — just like the pros at Avenue Library Code Club!

🌐

HTML & CSS — your own website

When you're ready, we move to text. You'll write real HTML tags, style pages with CSS colours and fonts, and understand how websites like this one are built.

Some of our members even help maintain this site — learning by doing is the best way.

🐍

Python — level up

For coders who've mastered blocks, Python opens a world of quizzes, calculators, art and automation. It's the same language used by scientists and game developers worldwide.

Share your projects with us

We love seeing what you create! The best projects get featured on our website and shared with the community.

At the end of many sessions we play-test each other's games, give kind feedback and sometimes have friendly competitions. It's one of the most fun parts of code club.

Special projects

We sometimes run exciting challenges — like sending pixel art to the International Space Station with Mission Zero, or themed sessions around holidays and local events.

Keep an eye on club dates for what's coming up next.
